Rev. Dr. Phil Phaneuf is the senior minister of The United Methodist Church of North Chili, a small UMC denomination in Rochester, NY.
During his November 23, 2025, sermon, Phaneuf, 51, shocked congregants by announcing that he was transgender and had already begun taking hormone replacement therapy, adding, “I’m not becoming a woman. I’m giving up pretending to be a man.”

Pastors all across America have been pushing women’s rights and feminism as long as I can remember. So I’m not sure why anyone would be surprised when they all announce that they are either gay, bi, or transsexual. In reality, most [not all), are still wearing the mask.

If the church doesn’t immediately eject him, the only thing for Christian congregants to do is to leave and find or start another body of true believers. This happened due to gradual compromise with sin, like the proverb ial frog in the pot. It’s doubtful that there are any true Christians in that congregation. All sins cause eternal death without God’s grace, but this kind of sin is part of the heavy artillery of the cultural revolutionaries who are hell bent on eradicating Christ from our world; Anti-Christ in a nutshell. Praying for and evangelising the lost is the cure.

Man is not created in a physical likeliness as God has no body. So what does likeness mean as defined in the Bible? The answer is found in Genesis.

This is the sad state of the Methodist Church. The lights be honest this is also this sad state of the church in Western culture. This is part of the reason my 3 churches unanimously left the UMC. This poor man needs our prayers for God to heal him from his mental illness. The UMC has become focused on becoming part of the culture instead of changing the culture. In doing so they are condemning souls that could be saved with repentance. We need to love people into a relationship with God instead of encouraging them in their sin.
Attempt to show compassion to people who are different than you. I understand how seeing a person profess an identity that to you feels unfamiliar and ever hedonistic can be upsetting and frightening. Unwavering and indiscriminate love and compassion are two of the most important values you should emulate as a Christian. I know right now you feel angry or even hopeless, but transgender people are not your enemy. God did not make a mistake in creating us, not in the slightest. We were made and chosen to have this deeper journey of self-determination and metamorphosis. God gives us all battles to fight; it is your purpose to turn not to anger but to love and understanding.
