The People’s Salvation Cathedral in Bucharest, the largest Orthodox church in the world, opened to the public on October 26, 2025, after more than 15 years of construction.
Also known as the National Cathedral, the church is more than 410 feet tall and cost more than $300 million to build. It has a capacity of 5,000 people and is adorned with hundreds of saints and icons, not including more than a hundred stained glass windows. It has the world’s largest Orthodox iconostasis (wall of icons) measuring 75 feet high.
The consecration was led by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, his All-Holiness Bartholomew I, and His Beatitude Daniel, the Patriarch of Romania.
While thousands have flocked to the unveiling, many have criticized the costs of the building, which began construction in 2010 at a price tag of $313 million—the vast majority of which came from public funds—given that the country has one of the largest budget deficits in the European Union.
