World Vision Hit With Racism, Sexism Charges For Mispronouncing Names of Non-White Employees
World Vision is facing criticism after its UK human resources team was accused of fostering a toxic and hostile work environment due to alleged racist and sexist behavior, according to the Third Sector, which stated it spoke to nearly a dozen current and former staff members. The Daily Mail reports:
World Vision UK’s human resources team were claimed to have mispronounced the names of non-white employees and their accents were imitated by colleagues. The department allegedly confused two black female workers, while complaints were apparently made by female employees of being patronised in meetings.
Further complaints claim that World Vision allowed homophobia to go unchecked, with reports about it being “ignored, silenced, or inadequately handled” by management, according to Civil Society, who explain:
The complaint alleges that the charity’s equity, diversity and inclusion group were told that “anti-LGBT staff members need to be allowed to have space too”.
In a staff Teams chat after a Pride event, a comment seen by Civil Society said that World Vision is “moving in the wrong direction away from the Lord” and that “it’s sad to see so many people being misled by the LGB…+ rainbow agenda”.
The complaint alleges that HR removed the comment but took no further action.
In response, World Vision dismissed the complaints as coming from a small number of former disgruntled associates who were terminated due to job cuts and restructuring.
Commenting on the allegations, a World Vision UK spokesperson offered: ‘We are not currently under investigation by the Charities Commission. If the Charity Commission contacts us in relation to this we will fully cooperate….We don’t believe the allegations made by a small number of former employees who have recently left the organisation are true.’
