Michael Tait Calls Victims and Apologizes: ‘I’ve Destroyed My World Around Me’
Disgraced former Newsboys frontman Michael Tait is seeking to make amends by calling his victims and apologizing, according to newly released audio from reporter Jessica Morris, writing for the Roys Report. Tait has been accused of drugging and molesting nearly a dozen young men over the last 25 years.
Tait made the 45-minute-long call to one of his victims, a young man who was a session and touring musician for Tait that he abused several times between 2002 and 2010.
“When I first made the advances on you, touched you inappropriately, and it just, it just bloomed out of control, and . . . it got the best of me. All I can say is, from my heart and I’m truly sorry, man . . .
…There’s no handbook on how to do this, except for the Bible…(You’re) the first of how many people, but (I’m calling ) just to ask forgiveness.
…I’ve cried, I’ve prayed, I’ve dealt with addictions on every level. I’ve lied, I’ve cheated, I’ve deceived, I’ve destroyed my world around me, set on fire everything around me, and one thing led to another, and the domino effect took over it. But it all started, you know, it all started somewhere.”
…I pray you can see that apology, and know it’s more than just that, but that’s a start.’
During the call, Tait focused on his cocaine use and sex as means of coping with trauma in his life and said that there were more victims, but so far none of them, at least at the time of the phone call this past summer, had pressed charges. While admitting to much of it, he denied flashing his penis to a 13-year-old boy, denied drugging a young woman who alleged she was subsequently raped, and insisted that the Newsboys didn’t know anything about it.
