Presbyterian Pastor Likens Jesus to a ‘Jester,’ While Spinning Plates and Plungers in Circus Show
Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church (PCUSA), one of the largest and oldest churches in New York City, was founded in 1808 and moved to its current building in 1875. Led by The Rev. Dr. Scott Black Johnston, the church is proudly LGBTQ affirming and inclusive. Its “About Us” page emphasizes, “We think less about what we believe as Christians than about what we do to be faithful disciples of Christ.”
During a recent service on the parables of Jesus, Johnston drew a parallel between Jesus speaking truth to power through the use of parables, and a court jester—the fool—using mockery and foolishness to make a point, saying “the classic definition of a fool is an individual touched by God who speaks truths, mysterious truths that others are afraid to speak or would rather ignore”
The inscrutable head scratching aspects of these stories reestablish the otherness of God, the strangeness of God. Some suggest that Jesus dabbles in all this mystery because he’s trying to tell the world rebellious truths and not get his head chopped off. He’s playing the role of the court jester. He attacks unhealthy character traits like greed and corrosive responses to conflict like violence in almost sneaky ways. ‘Did he just say what I think he said?’
And along the way he sows the seeds, the values of heaven…I like to picture Jesus as a jester, although I think we need a caveat. He wasn’t a court jester. Jesus spent the majority of his time talking not with governors and kings, but with ordinary people.
