In 2005, Marguerite Perrin became a viral sensation after appearing on the TV show ‘Trading Spouses’ where she had an epic meltdown.
A devout Christian from Louisiana, she swapped her husband for a man who was a hypnotist and whose wife was an astrologer. Predictably, her return to her family was explosive. Having to deal with a house full of occultic material for the last week, she decried the other family and their house as “dark sided” while screaming out in a guttural cry, “She’s not a Christian!”
Two years later, after the notoriety died down, tragedy struck. Her daughter Ashley, who appeared on the show, passed away in a car accident. She was 25 and left behind an 8 year old daughter. Perrin explained that she spiraled into depression and couldn’t get out of bed.
But in that moment, the gay community stepped in. Having adopted her as a viral icon, they sent her cards, flowers, and encouraging messages of support.
“[The gay community] weren’t scared to talk about me losing Ashley and say, ‘I’m sorry to hear about that…I was pretending like I was happy and okay. They wouldn’t leave me alone. You couldn’t help but talk to them and be okay with them. The people who write those little memes and do those little things, I love that. That’s what got me out of bed after Ashley’s death.”
Feeling the glow, Perrin returned to her dance studio with a new perspective, becoming a full LGBTQ ally. In the years since she’s been seen taking pictures with LGBTQ fans, waving Pride flags, and even dancing to Lady Gaga.
She recently appeared on a the video Podcast ‘very Delta’ with drag queen Delta Work, where she explained:
“My gay community is probably the most spiritual people I’ve met, more so than the Christian community that I go side by side with and attend church with….Yes, I’m a Christian. I can believe in Jesus, support the gay community, and listen to Lady Gaga.”
