New Study Reveals 30% Of Pastors Who Leave The Ministry Cite Burnout, Conflict with Church

Even though only around 1% of pastors leave the pulpit each year, of those who do, around a third of them cite burnout and conflict with their church as their reason for doing so, according to a new Lifeway research study into four Protestant denominations (Assemblies of God, Church of the Nazarene, The Wesleyan Church, and Southern Baptist Convention)

The report notes that nearly half (45%) of former pastors report facing major conflict in their church during their final year of service. Most (87%) encountered conflict at some point in their last congregation, often due to proposed changes (56%). Half experienced disputes with lay leaders (50%) or faced significant personal attacks (49%).
About two in five dealt with conflicts over expectations of their role (40%) or their leadership approach (38%). Roughly a quarter faced issues tied to national or local politics (27%) or doctrinal disagreements (22%). One in eight (12%) reported none of these issues.
While some pastors left the pulpit only a few years short of retirement, others had only just begun life in the ministry when they quit. A third (33%) left when they were between 55 and 66, but similar percentages left when they were 45-54 (35%) and 44 or younger (32%).
More than 2 in 5 (43%) never made it to a second church, leaving pastoral ministry entirely after their first. The same percentage (43%) served as a senior pastor for 10 years or less, including 21% who served five years or less. Around a third (32%) were a senior pastor between 11 and 20 years, while a quarter (25%) stood behind the pulpit for more than 20 years.
While “change in calling” represents 40% of the reasons pastors leave the pulpit, “half (53%) of former pastors are still working in the ministry, just in a role other than pastor. A third (32%) work in a non-ministry role. Few took early retirement (7%), disability (3%), are currently looking for work (2%) or have some other employment situation (2%).”
