Pope Meets With Terrorism-Supporting Iranian Cleric Who Oversees Persecution of Christian Converts
Pope Francis is under fire for meeting with Abolhassan Navab, an Iranian cleric who heads the regime’s University of Religions and Confessions (URC,) an entity responsible for overseeing the persecution of Christian converts in Iran.
According to Jason Brodsky, the Policy Director of United Against Nuclear Iran (“UANI”) and non-resident scholar of the Middle East Institute, Abolhassan Navab is a “founder of the University of Religions and Denominations. He’s a former representative of the supreme leader in the #IRGCterrorists and URD has supported terrorism:” The UANI explains:
Navab’s…held multiple senior positions in the IRGC. This includes serving as one of the heads of the IRGC’s Ideological-Political Organization (IRGC IPO). This organization oversees the indoctrination of IRGC members and their families in a violent, Islamist extremist ideology. IRGC IPO textbooks used to radicalize IRGC members openly call for recruits to kill Jews, Christians, and Zoroastrians via armed jihad on the basis that they “do not have acceptable faith.”
In a story posted by the Islamic Republic News Agency, (taken with a heaping tablespoon of salt) they allege that during the meeting, Pope Francis threw Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu under the bus, quoting him as saying :
We also have no problem with the Jews, and our only problem is with Benjamin Netanyahu, who regardless of International laws and human rights has created crises in the region and the world.
The article also recounts Navab saying, “The Iranian government and people are always ready to help spread peace and justice in the world and to achieve this goal, they warmly shake the hands of all those who take steps in this direction.”
The Vatican has not commented on what was discussed during this meeting, nor if what has been ascribed to him is a complete fabrication. Francis has been highly critical of Israel’s war in Gaza, previously calling the “global community” to study whether or not Israel is committing genocide there.
