The Gospel Coalition (TGC) continues its devolution from a reasonably reformed parachurch ministry to some bizarro Christian version of Cosmopolitan magazine, where half their content could be comfortably published alongside a personality test to see which fierce Bible heroine you are and a flowchart on the ‘Top 10 Sex Positions for Pastors.’
Fresh off their last published but-since-pulled Taylor Swift post, which we described as their “Worst and Gayest Article in Years”, TGC has come back to the cultural Swiftie trough, with their It’s Me, Hi, I’m the Problem, It’s Me: The Gospel in Taylor Swift Lyrics, article, showing yet again that TGC writers are so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they don’t stop to think if they should.
It’s not like we haven’t come to expect this from TGC, with their recent fascination with Taylor Swift and Barbie posts. This is the same organization that brought you TGC Senior Editor’s Favorite TV Show Contains Graphic Homosexual Sex Scene, the insistence by a TGC author that Christians Have Endured No ‘Hostility’ or ‘Ill-treatment’ From the Govt During the Pandemic, and lest we forget: TGC Author Suggests ‘Deadnaming’ Transexuals is ‘Disrespectful’.
Written by Izaac Cowling, a bible teacher out of Brisbane, he endeavors to recount the gospel of Jesus Christ using only a collection Taylor Swift lyrics, offering: “you don’t need Billy Graham to hear this beautiful story; all you need is your Taylor Swift playlist to start glitching…”
His lengthy, cobbled together summary of the gospel includes:
I lived, and I learned,
Had you, got burned;

God knows, too long.And wasted time, lost tears,
Swore that I’d get out of here,
But no amount of freedom gets you clean.
You’re not my homeland anymore,
Now I’m in exile.
and
You showed me something that I couldn’t see,

And I’ll never be the same,
This is a state of grace.Hell was the journey but it brought me heaven;
the green light of forgiveness.

Of course, notably absent from that “Gospel summary” is any reference to Jesus or the atonement, which makes the hours he spent on this post a moot point and totally irrelevant.
