All-Women’s Catholic College Reverses Plans to Allow Trans Applicants, Apologizes
Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana, has walked back plans to allow ‘trans’ women to apply to their center for higher learning, reversing a policy change from President Katie Conboy that read “(St. Mary’s) considers admission for undergraduate applicants whose sex is female or who consistently live and identify as women.”
St Mary’s is a private Catholic women’s liberal arts college that was established in 1844 and has around 1600 students. Their stated mission is to “empower women, through education, at all stages in life” by” fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive campus experience,” which is “inherently tied to the vision and values of our founders and sponsors, the Sisters of the Holy Cross.”
The move to update the nondiscrimination policy, which was approved by the board, was met with resistance from local Roman Catholics, including Fort Wayne-South Bend Bishop Kevin Rhoades, who ripped into the decision as against catholic teaching.
Conboy and Board of Trustees member Maureen Smith announced reversal in an email to the school, writing:
“When the board approved this update, we viewed it as a reflection of our college’s commitment to live our Catholic values as a loving and just community. We believed it affirmed our identity as an inclusive, Catholic, women’s college
As this last month unfolded, we lost people’s trust and unintentionally created division where we had hoped for unity. For this, we are deeply sorry.”
Of course, the fact that it was suggested and approved by the board in the first place means a reckoning must occur. The president and the entire board should be fired and exposed to public condemnation, with a public notice put out across campus that they were obnoxiously wrong and being led by their father the devil. They have shown themselves to be utterly disqualified, and absent this sort of punitive action, no one will learn, and they’ll try to do it again.
A sudden dose of sanity – how refreshing…
