Kat Von D Says ‘Christians Were the Worst’ When It Came to Criticizing Her Baptism+ Praises Her Small Church

Former tattoo artist and celebrity Kat Von D, who was recently baptized after renouncing the occult, responded to people’s criticism of her baptism video, saying that the worst reaction she received was not from atheists but from other Christians. In a video posted to Instagram (below) she explains:

“I know that a lot of people want me to share my testimony, and I’m definitely not going to do that today,” she said, “but I do plan on doing that maybe like in a podcast interview or some kind of format where I can just give you 100% of me.”

In a refreshing turn of events, she explained that she doesn’t want to comment or talk about her faith much or go on the testimony circuit because:

“I don’t really feel equipped to be the poster child for Christianity. I think I’m still learning, and as I do, I will become more equipped. But for the time being, I’ve never really been that, and I don’t plan on doing that.”

Von D said she expected to get a lot of hate after being baptized but was surprised at the “overwhelmingly beautiful amount of just positivity and just love” she received from her fans and followers, the majority who are not Christian. She notes that “my baptism was a public demonstration of where I stand with my faith and basically letting people know that I’m not ashamed.” Sadly, she says most of the negative comments she received were from fellow Christians

“But there was this other side of the response that was just so awful. And it wasn’t my atheist friends. You know, you would think that all the hate would be coming from people who are against religion or against Christianity and stuff. And, you know, we got the typical dumb mean emoji comments.
But it was really the Christians who were the worst. And it was really sad to see this critical display of judgment from Christians.

And I don’t understand what would inspire that aside from something that’s more egoic. Because that isn’t Christ like to judge people or judge people’s journey. You would think that most Christians would be happy for you when you come to this point in your life, especially when you get baptized. Like baptism is so beautiful and it’s such a big landmark in time for me, at least it was one of the most important days of my life. So it’s strange that these handful of negative critical Christians would come at me in such a public way as well.”

She says she receives criticism for the way she dressed “there is a certain aesthetic that is a very stereotypical aesthetic for like the Christian community. And that is not me. Like, I don’t dress like that.” and that many people were criticizing her husband Rafale Reyes, a musician in the “cholo goth” genre, which is filled with expletive and dark and violent imagery.

“You don’t know the dynamics of our marriage and you don’t know what somebody’s going through. My husband has his own journey and I am here to support him and be there for him as much as I can and be the best wife that I can be for him.

But until he makes his own decisions, should I just abandon ship? Should I just divorce my husband and uproot the beautiful nuclear family that we have because he doesn’t sing lyrics the way that you think he should sing lyrics? The way that some of those comments were phrased were just so awful and cruel.”

She concludes by giving a shout-out to her church:

“I do want to give a huge shout-out to my actual church. I go to a really small church here in my town, Vive, Indiana, and it’s called Switzerland Baptist Church. And we have a very small congregation. Some days it’s 12 people, some days it’s 25 people. And I don’t go to a mega church and I’m not dissing any megachurches, but that’s just not my vibe.

I don’t really care about smoke and mirrors or how big your band is. Like our little choir, we just we sing from the heart. We might not be the best, but we sing from the heart. And I think that that’s that’s like what worship is and what it should be.”
