Caedmon’s Call Releases New Album with Cross-Dressing Atheist in Tow
Well-known Contemporary Christian Music artist Caedmon’s Call has re-released their debut album after 25 years, bringing back all old members to re-record the album that contains explicitly Christian lyrics, including one member who is a LGBTQ-supporting, cross dressing atheist.
Formed in 1993, Caedmon’s Call released its first major album, the self-titled Caedmon’s Call, in 1997. Powered by songs such as ‘Hope to Carry On’ and ‘Lead of Love,’ fusing a folk sound with alternative rock, it put them on the map and would go on to power the next 15 years of albums, with the band disbanding in 2011 but then regrouping on and off for the next dozen years.
Derek Webb, the guitarist and vocalist for the band, was often seen as the face of the music group. He left in 2001 to pursue a solo career but would frequently collaborate with his former group. He began deconstructing his faith around the time he cheated on his wife and got divorced, ultimately renouncing his former beliefs altogether. Since then, he’s been an enthusiastic advocate for all things progressive and perverse.
Last year the band launched a Kickstarter to get the album made, surpassing their original $75,000 goal in a matter of hours, and ultimately ended with nearly $300,000.
“at some point over the past 25 years our self-titled album managed to go out-of-print, which means you can’t find it at your favorite record store, err… streaming platform. It’s kind of hard to celebrate an album you can’t even listen to.
So like any band in their right mind, we thought, WWTSD?: What Would Taylor Swift Do? That’s when it all became clear.
To celebrate the songs that started it all for us, we’re going back in the studio together to completely re-record the Caedmon’s Call album (including a few bonus b-sides & rarities), and we’re bringing some good friends with us to film and document the whole thing.
In addition to the album and documentary, we’re going to top the whole thing off with a one-night-only performance at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN.
While the album may not be in print for records, it certainly was available on Spotify and Apple Music, with the album being remastered in 2006. The whole album could be purchased for 7$, suggesting it wasn’t so much about access for fans, but financial benefits to the band members.
The band released their album in November 2022 and followed it up with a series of live shows and concerts last month.
We wrote about Webb recently after the prominent atheist and apostate announced he was collaborating with a Drag queen to create an album “on a music album about the spiritual trauma he endured growing up in a town where his whole world was a “faith-saturated, fundamentalist, very evangelical space that didn’t exactly embrace a queer kid with cross-dressing tendencies.”
Caedmon’s Call may soon have some company in this space, with Christian Singer Toby Mac saying that year that he’s open to a new DC Talk album, which would include pro-choice, pro-queer, atheist bandmate Kevin Max.
…and the enemy gains another. Sad.
My most recent pay test was for a 12-hour-per-week internet job for 9,500 dollars. For months, my sister’s friend has been making an average of 15,000, and she puts in about 20 hours every week. As soon as I gave it a try, I was shocked at how simple it was.
