Christian Group Trademarks Phrase ‘Worship Leader’ + Sends Legal Notice to Those Using It

Update, the group that trademarked it has responded to criticism, giving THIS defense.

Days ago, Scot Leonard, the Worship Director at Cocalico Community Church, who runs the Rogue Worship Leader Facebook page, had his entire Facebook taken down. During the appeal process, he discovered that his page was taken down for violating community guidelines.

In particular, he discovered that Authentic Media LLC reported him for unauthorized use of their trademark and that this group trademarked the phrase ‘Worship Leader’ years ago.

In the same way that some companies have trademarked their company name (Nike) or some people have trademarked phrases commonly associated with them (let’s get reaaaaaaady to rumble), this group has trademarked the term ‘Worship leader’ claiming that they literally coined the phrase.

Authentic Media LLC runs the website worshipleader.com where they claim:

“Worship Leader’s mission and passion is to exalt God (Father, Son, & Holy Spirit) and join those called to lead in sung prayer and the service of worship with the express purpose of building the House of Prayer for all nations (Isa 56:7, Mk 11:17) and generations.

Together with pastors, musicians, scholars, educators, centers of learning, artists, technologists, sound engineers, arrangers, composers, poets, painters, theologians, producers and publishers, we covenant to recover, discover, and share treasures of worship, both old and new and stir the biblical imagination of this and following generations.”

Sounds like money-grubbin’ to us.

  1. Their defense of it is absolutely ridiculous. People need to cut them off. They can keep the term if it means that much to them. Their “ministry” is absolutely revealed to be a farce now.
