Bethel-Baptized Disney Star Drops the Jesus-Bomb at Kids Choice Awards

Weeks after gay Disney star Joshua Bassett got baptized at a Bethel Chuch Service and then hosted a pop-up religious show in LA where he played worship songs, gave a mini-sermonette to fans in attendance, and shared his testimony, he appeared at the Kids’ Choice Awards where he gave his thanks to “my savior, Jesus Christ”, something he’d not done before. During the event, he told the crowd:

“I’d like to thank my lovely supporters. I’d love to thank the cast and crew of ‘High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,’ and I’d love to thank my savior, Jesus Christ.

I want to say something. There are a lot of people here who are burdened, broken-hearted, and have been beated down by life. And I’m here to tell you, for those of you who have lost hope, there’s a very real God who loves you more than you will ever possibly know. Ok? His promise is peace and my testimony is my healing. Remember, forgive quickly, love freely and walk courageously. Love always wins in the end.”

It’s an encouraging step for Basset, whose supposed conversion made the news across the world. Before and after his baptism earlier in the year, Bassett offered a series of posts speaking of Jesus and his new found faith.

After news of his baptism hit the media, many expressed concern over Bethel church’s anti-LGBTQ theology, prompting Bassett to clarify that he strongly condemned gay conversion therapy and wasn’t aware of Bethel’s stance on it before being baptized there.

Though many will take this testimony and declare for absolute certainty that Bassett is a believer, all the usual cautions should apply. The evangelical landscape is littered with celebrities that believers have been burned on, desperately pointing to every little morsel and scrap of religiosity as some vindication for their faith. Nothing should be assumed.

Still, we ought to be hopeful that he’s been saved and patient with him as he begins the process of sanctification, including making public errors. Above all else, we should pray that he gets surrounded by faithful Christians who will lead and disciple him.

  1. Thanks to God for giving this young man the courage to lift up Jesus, knowing the likely fallout he would be forced to endure.

  2. My understanding is that he still identities as queer. I am prayerful that he is genuinely seeking the Lord but, so far, I have not been made aware of him changing his stance on sexuality. If that’s the case, he’s not yet been regenerated by the Spirit, though paying lip service as though he has.
