Idaho Town Defies Cross Ban in July 4th Parade

Several months ago, the Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber in Idaho banned the use of crosses and other religious symbols in its July 4th parade, passing a bylaw making “symbols associated with specific political movements, religions or ideologies” unacceptable.

Chamber President Linda Coppess shared that the new policies were initiated after complaints last year about some of the visuals in the parade, including “Confederate flags, derogatory illustrations, harsh politically-based language, and graphic photographs.” According to the Coeur d’Alene Press:

The chamber listed several other things as unacceptable for the parade, including signs promoting controversial political issues, displays containing divisive or inflammatory language related to political debates and signs displaying slogans or messages that incite political division or unrest….

Other unacceptable signage included campaign materials promoting ballot measures or political initiatives; and any signage promoting political events or fundraisers and images or messages “that directly attack or antagonize individuals or groups based on their political beliefs or affiliations.”

Naturally, the city’s understanding of what is and is not offensive and unacceptable quickly goes off the rails when one considers their resounding support of PRIDE events and all the vulgar shenanigans and messaging that accompany them.

Thankfully, following a public outcry, which Coppes said was rife with “misunderstandings and accusations” while insisting “the original policy was not meant to isolate individuals or be considered an anti-religious policy,” the board made an exception for religious symbols and reversed that part of the ban, which brought an onslaught of crosses to the show.

Well done!
