Good News! Christian College Closing After 168 Years

According to a report from the Christian Post, a Christian college with ties to the United Methodist Church is closing after 168 years, unable to keep its doors open any longer amid a raft of financial struggles.

The Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama was initially founded in 1856 by Methodist missionaries as Southern University but merged with Birmingham College in 1918. Like most things tied to the United Methodist Church, the college, which boasted 1300 students, eventually went off the rails into apostasy and heresy, perhaps best seen with their commitment to Diversity and Inclusion through their Safezone program, which is fully of affirming LGBTQ folks, or their chapel group, which hosts interfaith worship services?

Given these gross acts of unfaithfulness, why wouldn’t we want them to collapse and die under the weight of their arrogance and comeuppance?

Accoridng to the Post:

The College focused on raising unrestricted operating funds and drew too heavily on its shrinking endowment without making meaningful progress in increasing that endowment,” added the FAQ page.

The college also cited significant financial setbacks, such as “several ambitious capital projects in the mid-2000s” that incurred “large debt to fund them” and a loss of about $25 million to its endowment when the financial markets crashed in 2009. In 2010, the college discovered “a material error in the budgeting of federal student financial aid, which came to about $5 million per year against a budget of $49 million.”

BSC Board of Trustees Chair Rev. Keith Thompson lamented the imminent closure of his school, describing it as “a tragic day for the College, our students, our employees, and our alumni, and an outcome so many have worked tirelessly to prevent.”

We couldn’t be more thrilled.
