Liam Goligher Sends Cease and Desist Letter to Watchdog Group Who Outted His Arrest

Former Tenth Presbyterian Church pastor Liam Goligher has sent a ‘cease and desist’ letter to Anglican Watch, accusing them of making “salacious (sic) slanderous and speculative statements” about him, especially over allegations he engaged in sexual activity with one of his deaconesses. Goligher is demanding that the group remove and retract the statements lest they face further legal action.

Earlier this month, the watchdog group published arrest records from nearly a decade ago showing Goligher was arrested in a city park with one of his church deaconesses and that he pled guilty to personal conduct charges, which The Lancaster Parks and Recreation Department has confirmed is language frequently used to identify sexual behavior or public indecency. Following the revelation, Goligher resigned from the pastorate.

Responding to the letter, Anglican Watch has been defiant, viewing the action against them as proof Goligher is unrepentant, and responded with the following claims:

  1.  Their terms of service specifically forbid using their email to send legal notices, and as a result “they will be filing a disciplinary complaint against Mr. Goligher’s attorney, Richard Coble, for computer trespass.”
  2. “There’s nothing tortious about content that is speculative.”
  3. “Truth is a near-absolute defense to claims of defamation. If Goligher wants to put into motion a debate involving his conduct within Susan Elzey, he’d better be prepared for the outcome. And we have lots of additional information on Goligher that is not favorable that would almost certainly come out in any lawsuit.
  4. “In Pennsylvania, written statements that are defamatory are libel, not slander. Slander involves spoken statements, so the various quotes the attorney cites are by definition not slanderous.
  5. “Any attorney foolish enough to sue Anglican Watch will discover we have set up our corporate entity to make a successful lawsuit impossible. We won’t go into the details, but someone can spend a whole lot of money suing us, only to discover they are spinning their wheels.

The group promises that if Goligher insists on legal action “we will publish about the experience, every inch of the way. And guaranteed, if your reputation is bad now, it will be a whole lot worse when your lawsuit is over.”
