Multiple Christian Radio Stations Refuse to Play Hit Song Over ‘Theologically Incorrect Lyrics’

At least thirteen radio stations have refused to play Tauren Well’s song ‘Crazy About You’ over concerns that the lyrics were ‘biblically in error,’ as reported by Church Leaders.

According to his bio, Tauren Wells is a “celebrated recording artist, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, with 10 GRAMMY Award nominations, six number 1’s, 225+ million career video views, six GMA Dove Awards, Billboard Music Award nominations, and over 1 billion global streams to date.”

In a few months, he and his wife will be the new lead pastors of a church plant in Texas.

He recently shared a video on Instagram about pushback to his song, revealing “I’ve had a lot of people that have taken issue with my song ‘crazy about you.’ It’s kind of crazy” and that “even radio programmers won’t play it because they feel there is something wrong about the theology of the song.”

We’ve included a sampling here, with Wells sharing that the lyrics in bold have caused the most problems.

He’s never been mad at you
He’s only been madly in love

And it’s never been about what you do
It’s always been about what He’s done
It’s something you just can’t hear enough

He’s crazy about you
Didn’t wanna live without you
He traded the stars for a chance at your heart
Just to show you it’s true

He’s never held your past against you
He’s only held you close

He’d never give and take it back
You are the one He chose
And the more of Him you know
You’ll know

Wells explained that the actions of these radio programmers have pushed him to see if what he wrote was a theological error because “I don’t want to be in that place. I want to honor God, and I want to honor scripture, and I certainly don’t want to characterize God in a way that is unfaithful to the word.”

To that end, he quoted extensively from Dane Ortland’s book Gentle and Lowly to buttress and emphasize his point that Jesus was not mad at the people he interacted with. (We discussed this awful book in our post Grace to You Exposes Evangelicalism’s Gentle and Lowly Soft Underbelly)

Wells ultimately pushed back on correction, offering that “I don’t think I should be penalized for a particular viewpoint of scripture that emphasizes the love of God on Christian radio format.’

“Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

He will render to each one according to his works:  to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury. Romans 2:4-8

  1. Tauren Wells is a narcissist and he is in flagrant rebellion to the Word of God. Wonder if those same radio stations that deny Wells’ song play songs from cults like Hillsong, Bethel and Elevation “Worship”…

  2. Another “successful” Christian artist that writes songs about what he thinks the Bible means. Pick and choose the attributes of God you like and disregard the others. Shameful….
