Southern Baptist Committee Disfellowships Church For Affirming LGBTQ
While the Southern Baptist Convention Credentials Committee refuses to do the hard thing and disfellowship churches within the denomination that have women pastors on staff in contravention of Baptist Faith & Message 2000, they are occasionally willing to deal with easier low-hanging fruit that is practically off the vine and laying on the ground. Rick Warren’s Saddleback Church and many, many, many others that employ pastrixes are safe enough, yet other more blatant provocateurs will still earn a boot.
These include College Park Baptist Church in Greensboro, N.C, which openly advertises that they affirm homosexuality and are an ‘inclusive’ congregation. The best line on their website is this statement “We perform same-sex weddings and welcome many that have been beaten up by the Bible at other churches,” i.e., We’ll accept anyone who refuses to submit to the scriptures.
Their website says they are affiliated with the American Baptist Churches USA (ABCUSA), allowing individual congregations to determine how queer-affirming they wish to be. So they get excised for that, having long ago given themselves over to the due penalty for their error.
The other church that got chopped is Amazing Grace Community Church in Franklinville, N.J. They got dinged for “a lack of cooperation demonstrated … to resolve concerns regarding alleged discriminatory behavior.” After sending multiple requests going back eight months, all going unanswered, they were removed.
Sanity in a sea of crazy – bravo.
