Worship Leader Cory Asbury Defends Painting his Nails with THIS Justification

Christian worship leader Cory Asbury, the former member of the Bethel Music collective best known for the monstrously popular song ‘Reckless Love” has broken his long-held silence about his propensity to wear nail polish in public, explaining that there’s nothing Jesus or the Bible has said that prohibits him from doing it, and that any opposition to it is rooted in ‘societal construct’ and ‘social norms.’

In a post on Instagram that has received nearly 250,000 views, 40,000 likes and 2500 comments, he explains:

Hi, Cory Asbury here. It is remarkable to me how many times I get asked this question. Number on; I have three daughters. It’s one of their favorite things to do, paint daddy’s nails. They love it. They think it’s amazing. They think it’s incredible. And you know, the funny thing is, is a segue into number two, they have never once thought to themselves, ‘it’s weird that daddy paints his nails’.

You know why? Because that is a societal construct. That is a social norm that we have accepted that men don’t paint their nails. That is cultural. It has zero to do with the Bible, Jesus, Christianity, moral code, at all it just in general.

It doesn’t make any sense to question the idea, unless you’ve grown up in a culture that says it’s not okay to do something. Jesus could care less what color your frickin’ nails are. Because the truth is, as he says, about King David in the Old Testament, I’m not concerned with the outward appearance. Man looks at the outward appearance, God looks at the heart. And my heart’s definitely painted.

After posting, his combox responses were mostly negative, with many of commenters asking if the same theological justifications would apply to boys and young men wearing makeup, lipstick or dresses in school. Others asked asked him to reconsider in light of the transgender craze and a society seeking to erase gender differences, warning this is a slippery slope.

“Oh bruh, the story started out cute and all, but then you said “societal construct” and everything else after that just kinda faded away.”

“How can anyone read Deuteronomy 22:5 and think that the God of the Bible doesn’t care about gender roles or how you present yourself? It seems like God created social constructs. I’d love to hear other perspectives on this.”

“When the blurring of the lines between male and female is an prominent as it is nowadays it’s probably best to live a life and behave in such a way as to affirm the differences in men and women, especially when modeling that for children.”

“Would love to hear your thoughts on the ways you think the church should/should not guide on societal constructs and social norms. Should they be disregarded. I.e. makeup, cross dressing etc… to name a few.”

“Being that I have little boys.. this is a hard pass..like .. HARD pass. Just as I wouldn’t allow them to wear a dress they are absolutely not painting their nails.”

Lastly, Christian musicians Israel Houghton, Mark Barlow, Tim and The Glory Boys (Starfield) and Bizzle all chimed in as supporters or detractors

  1. It’s effeminate – and the Bible says men who practice being effeminate won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Besides that, it’s distracting from worshiping God in spirit and truth.
Stop it – or resign from being a worship leader.
And then check yourself to see if you really are in the faith.
