TGC Author Suggests ‘Deadnaming’ Transexuals is ‘Disrespectful’

TGC Author Charlie Self has written an article suggesting that it’s ‘peacemaking’ and ‘respectful’ to call transgendered people by their current name and that it is disrespectful to ‘deadname’ them by calling them by their birth name or the name they used before they identified as a different gender. (ie, trans movie star Ellen page should no longer be called that, but instead ‘Elliot Page’)

When asked about whether or not Christians should consent to use personal pronouns, Self is non-committal, suggesting that “insisting on using correct pronouns for a person who has asked you not to can come across as disrespectful and antagonistic.” that his best advice is to avoid using them altogether, or use the generic “they.”

Self then links to an J.D Greear article, where Greear says he would use personal pronouns.

“Christians disagree—hopefully charitably—about pronoun usage. Some think that as a personal courtesy, you should refer to a transgender person by their preferred pronoun. Others think that it is wrong to inject further confusion into a person’s situation by referring to them with a pronoun that is not aligned with their biological sex. In other words, there is a spectrum of generosity of spirit vs. telling truth. I tend toward generosity of spirit.

Greear links to a Preston Sprinkle quote where he praises “pronoun hospitality.”

All Christians can and should use pronouns that reflect the expressed gender identities of transgender people, regardless of our views about gender identity ethics. If a person identifies herself to you as ‘she,’ I hope you will consider it an act of Christ-like love to call her ‘she’ out of respect, whether or not you believe that the way she expresses her gender identity is honoring to God.”

Self also links to an Andrew Walker article, who says “My own position is that if a transgender person comes to your church, it is fine to refer to them by their preferred pronoun. (at least for a while)

It’s one capitulation after another.

  1. That doesn’t even work on the level of secular ethics, much less Biblical ethics. It’s extremely disrespectful of them to demand that a Christian speak their “pronouns” supporting and endorsing their abominable wickedness, or have anything to do with them at all, in violation of conscience, in violation of God’s Word, in rebellion to God and disrespecting Him. Respect is a two-way street. If none is shown, none is due. If they demand you speak against your conscience and against God’s standards, they’ve already infringed on your rights, already disrespected you, and therefore have no right to expect respect in return.

Sin is to be rejected, not respected. The Bible is clear, not only is homosexuality an abomination, but even making oneself appear to be the opposite sex, by even wearing their clothes, is an abomination.

Better worry more about whether or not you’re respecting or antagonizing God Almighty. If the world doesn’t respect that, it’s their problem.

      1. You’re on a path headed straight to Hell (1 Cor. 6:9-11, Rom. 6). Repent while there is still time.

  2. At what point does the ‘church’ stop accommodating the progressives and actually call ‘sin’ sin. We have the Word of God that gives fairly clear direction on how to live life. And it is always the best to speak truth. The weak capitulation to gay marriage is swiftly leading to the normalization of pedophilia. And since those engaged in these same – sex relationships have no natural offspring of their own, they will necessarily come after the children from God – ordained unions. At some point it will be necessary to revisit this evil with force. And no, I will not support the lie that you can change your gender, sex or presentation. We were made in God’s image. Mental illness is running rampant in the current culture and we must oppose these obsequious treaties to the Faith who seek to normalize abhorrent behavior.

  3. Which name does God have written down in the Lamb’s Book of Life for any of these transgendered people if they ever get saved — seeing that their name was written before the foundation of the world (Rev. 13:8)? If you live a lie (through self-mutilation), you actually expect God to endorse your lie via your new name? There is no “Caitlyn” Jenner in the Lamb’s Book of Life — but there might be a Bruce Jenner if HE repents.
