Progressive ‘Christian’ Musician to Release Worship Album ‘For Heretics and Outcasts’

Michael Gungor of the grammy-nominated band “Gungor” has announced that he is releasing a new worship album, and it’s about as bad one can expect,

Gungor has always been walking the edge of Christian orthodoxy, at least for those who are like-minded. Existing within the outskirt of Christian artistry, they’re the kind of band that Rachel Held Evans would have wanted to be played at her funeral, or perhaps who might be the opening act for Rob Bell or any other professing Christian who actually hates Jesus but doesn’t want to own up to it yet.

While Orthodox Christians wrote them off a long time ago, and the band itself eschews labels of what isn’t and is not Christian belief, they are still very popular with progressives as well as those who pour over the pages of Relevant Magazine, putting shows on at churches and Christian conferences still, despite frontman Michael describing himself as an on-again, off-again “Atheist.”

Three months ago, Michael took the time on Twitter to out himself as a thorough pagan, sending out the following tweets:

Yet just three months after that, he has announced that he’s back and is relating a worship album

When I say “worship,” I’m not talking about the shamey, homage-paying to some other being somewhere else, but the experience of love and connection that can happen when people get together and sing to their Source. For me, the truest worship is simply and fully loving what is. Worship is allowing every breath, sensation, and experience of life to become a sensuous, embodied “Hallelujah!” Worship is saying “yes” to your life, to your Source. And with that lens, I don’t think worship should just be for church folks. It shouldn’t just be for those who believe this thing or that. Worship is for everyone.

So we decided we wanted to try making some worship music again that would be enjoyable for people who might not fit the traditional religious boxes like us. Worship for the heretics and the outcasts. The questioners and the mystics. I think we need some good worship music too. “

Gross.

As far as the first two singles on his new worship album, the lyrics are complete trash. One song, Feel the Moment, basically consists of the phrase “feel the moment” 45 times and “feel the life/love in your body” over and over again. The other song ‘Everything is hallelujah‘ misgenders the Holy Spirit indulges in unbiblical imagery and a touch of theoeroticism.

“Spun from your wildest dreams
Ribbons and trampolines
I’ll be your fantasy if you’ll be my heart
You’re every kiss
You’re the bliss in a million eyes
The dust becomes realized
The Spirit, she breathes
With raindrops and seas “

Worship album for heretics indeed.

  1. Praise be to Yahweh is a very odd refrain for an apparent Universalist… since that is the Hebrew of Hallelujah.
