Prominent Colorado Megachurch Pastor Resigns Following Allegations He Covered Up Robert Morris’s Child Abuse
Brady Boyd, the embattled senior pastor of New Life Church, a prominent 15,000-member multisite megachurch in Colorado, has resigned following allegations that he was aware of sexual abuse committed by Robert Morris against a 12-year-old girl, failed to report it, and misled his congregation about his knowledge of the matter.
Boyd is the second senior pastor from New Life Church to resign in disgrace after his predecessor, former leader Ted Haggard resigned after a male prostitute claimed they’d been having sexual encounters for years and that Haggard used crystal meth- claims that were not unfounded.
During Friday night’s service, the church’s elders announced Boyd’s resignation to the congregation, as reported by KOAA-TV.
“Recently, Brady has insisted that he was unaware until 2024 that Miss Clemishire was 12 years old at that time that Morris had abused her in the 80s.
We believe this to be inaccurate. Brady also made statements in his public address to the congregation on June 8 that the Board of Elders know to be inaccurate.”
They added:
Brady had nothing to do with Robert Morris’s past abuse. Still, we believe that trust is the currency of leadership. When Brady recently told our congregation inaccurately that he was unaware of certain details regarding Morris’s past abuse, trust was broken.”
Boyd, who previously served as an elder of Gateway Church from 2001-2007 under Robert Morris, told his congregation on June 8 that the first time he heard about Morris’ sexual abuse of Cindy Clemishire was last year and that he was shocked to learn about it. He offered that he knew Morris had a “moral failing” years ago but was never told any further details. He told his congregants during that meeting:
As your pastor, I want you to know something about me; when I stand here in front of you every Sunday, everything I tell you is the truth. I will never ever tell something that’s slanted or untrue. I’ll never be manipulative toward you. I’ll never tell you a half truth
When Boyd was considering the new position at New Life Church, Cleminshire’s sister was a member of New Life Church and met with the search committee and told them that Morris Morris sexually abused her sister as a minor, and was wary of Morris’s potential influence over the church. Boyd recounts that the search committee contacted Gateway about it.
“The elders of Gateway Church said “We we’re aware of that, it’s been been handled. Her family, her pastor has given Robert a thumbs up. They’ve gone through a process of restoration and there’s nothing left to do, it’s already been reported. But the search committee didn’t tell me.
…I did not know, but the but I would never, ever, put a known pedophile in a place of authority in this church.
Legal documents recently filed suggest otherwise. A letter sent by Robert Morris’s lawyer to an outside law firm tasked with investigating Gateway Church insists that all the elders at the church between 2000 and 2023 knew Morris molested and sexually abused Clemishire and did nothing about it.
The letter, sent by William B. Mateja of Sheppard, Mullin, Richter and Hampton LLP to Ron Breaux and Taryn McDonald of Haynes & Boone reads in part:
It also bears noting that the evidence we provided over the course of our cooperation with the Haynes & Boone investigation effectively establishes that Gateway Church and the Board of Elders well knew not only that Pastor Robert had a relationship with an underage minor in his past, but also that Ms. Clemishire was in her early teens at the time.
Below is a brief recap summarizing just some of our documented findings:
b. Since Gateway first opened, Pastor Robert was confronted about his encounters with Ms. Clemishire multiple times including at least in 2005, 2007, and 2011- 2012. In each instance, Pastor Robert informed and conferred with members of the Board of Elders regarding his history with Ms. Clemishire, the present allegations, and/or demands, and how he and/or Gateway should respond.
a. From Gateway’s opening in 2000 until at least 2023, prospective Gateway elders were informed of Robert’s moral failure that occurred in his early 20s—namely, his sexual encounters with an underage girl and the restoration process he went through thereafter at Shady Grove church. After being told, prospective elders had to affirm that they still wanted to be an elder for Gateway despite knowing this information.
And
This is confirmed by documentation, to wit:
- Minutes from some such meetings reference Ms. Clemishire by name.
- In multiple of these instances, Gateway elders responded on Pastor Robert’s behalf-including in direct communications with Ms. Clemishire and others.
- The elders reviewed proposed public statements drafted by Pastor Robert which detailed Ms. Clemishire’s age and minority status during their encounter.
- Elders even confirmed Ms. Clemishire’s age in 2011 when the issue resurfaced.
c. Pastor Robert agreed to be (and was) recorded during a conversation in early 2024, wherein he once again recounted the details of his encounters with Ms. Clemishire—including her age at the time to multiple Gateway employees, including at least one elder.
d. After the Wartburg Watch published an article about Pastor Robert and Ms. Clemishire on June 14, 2024 (the “Blog Post”), Gateway’s Board of Elders participated in email exchanges and in-person discussions wherein they demonstrated (and even admitted) that the facts detailed within the Blog Post were not new to any of the elders.
Boyd, who served as senior pastor for 18 years, has been succeeded by Associate Pastor Daniel Grothe, who will assume the role of senior pastor.
