Lifeway Prominently Promotes Female Pastor to Southern Baptists

Church of the City is a multi-site megachurch with four campuses across Tenessee. They have 10 women pastors on staff (click to enlarge), but also another who is no longer publicly listed.

Kristi McLelland is a long-term member of COTC. A popular speaker, teacher, and professor at Williamson College, who occasionally preaches at the church. Previously, she was listed on the Pastoral & Ministry Staff page as a teaching pastor, but her profile is no longer active.

Curiously, the SBC still lists them as being affiliated, despite unaffiliating a a decade ago.

Yet despite her photo being taken down sometime between January and March 2025, she is still listed as a pastor by the church whenever she preaches, including as recently as April 27, 2025– after the removal.

Notably, this pastor has her own splash page on Lifeway, the publishing arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, being a featured author and “Lifeway Woman,” who is aggressively promoted to SBC women.

She currently has 27 products for sale and is advertising five events, including conferences she will be attending and a teaching cruise.

In fact, when you click on “Bible Studies,” she, along with a long list of women authors are what pre-populates.

Similarly, in the “Books” tab, it’s also almost exclusively women, except for Tony Evans, who stepped away from public ministry after confessing to unspecified sins that required him to repent and undergo a process of restoration.

  1. There’s a statement that was made years ago but I think applies perfectly here: In the first millenium, the Christian church’s main enemies were from outside. In the second millenium, they came from within.

    It appears that Christianity no longer needs pagans, atheists, Satanists, etc., as we’re doing just fine destroying the faith ourselves. Why would we do this? What is going on?

    2. We are no longer salt and light nor do we really see a compelling need to be so. We are comfortable with sin in society. I’m not saying we approve of it but it’s clear we have no anguish over our sin. Hey, as long as the church can serve us and we’re not expected to serve His kingdom, what do we care, right? So our Lord will raise up someone else to be His light and salt.

  2. I am creating an honest wage from home of 1900 Dollars/week, which is wonderful, below a year gone I was unemployed during an atrocious economy. I convey God daily. 3. Women are not to be pastors.

    1 Timothy 3:2
    KJV: A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

    How can a woman be the husband of one wife? pastors are to be MEN.
