The Presbyterian Church (USA) has shuttered the missionary division of the denomination, eliminating all foreign mission co-worker roles and closing down the World Mission offices.
While the PCUSA originally made the announcement in January that it planned to cut missionaries by 50% as part of its restructuring efforts, it turns out deeper cuts had to be made. The progressive denomination has been battling declining membership, donations, and a loss of relevancy for years, and it became apparent that they would not be able to maintain even those levels, thus concluding it altogether.
“We’re witnessing the slow dismantling of one of our church’s most defining ministries,” said Karla Ann Koll, one of the missionaries to Costa Rica who was terminated. “At a time when the world needs solidarity, this decision sends the opposite signal.”
Despite having a 200-year history of sending missionaries, even the meager amounts were unsustainable. Fifteen years ago, they had more than 180 foreign missionaries; last year, they had a mere 60, and now those are gone too. According to AL.com
The denomination has drastically cut its mission staff from about 60 missionaries, notifying 54 mission “co-workers” on Feb. 4 they would be terminated. Some staff members, no more than 30, will be assigned as global ecumenical advisors, who will work with Presbyterian churches in other countries. Those advisors have not been publicly named, so it’s not clear if some will come from the fired missionaries.
Executive Director of the IUA Jihyun Oh, told the Presbyterian News Service.
This approach continues our commitment to partnership and takes the next step of moving from sending missionaries to being more equal ministry partners in the world. We have been shifting in that direction for decades and are taking another significant step this year. … The hope is that this approach will help us be more nimble in responding to the ongoing shifts in the world and in the church while continuing to foster deeper and broader relationships with faith communities worldwide.”

This should surprise nobody; recently I read an accurate description of the PCUSA on Protestia as a “rapidly declining, boutique denomination. The former denominations (that combined in 1983 to form the PCUSA) had a combined membership of 4.5 million. Today, the PCUSA has less than 1.1 million members; a 75% decline in less than 60 years. The PCUSA has failed spectacularly, and this is one result.
