Woman Found Guilty of Holding Up Sign Saying ‘Here to talk, if you want’ near Abortion Clinic
A UK judge has found a 64-year-old pro-life advocate guilty of violating the country’s strict buffer zones outside abortion clinics and was sentenced to a conditional discharge two years.
Livia Tossici-Bolt was handed a ‘guilty’ verdict after being arrested and charged with holding up a sign saying “Here to talk, if you want” too close to an abortion clinic, in violation of the Public Spaces Protection Order.
District Judge Orla Austin said she “lacks insight that her presence could have a detrimental effect on the women attending the clinic, their associates, staff, and members of the public.”
Livia has also been ordered to pay prosecution costs of around USD $26,000.
Jeremiah Igunnubole, a lawyer for ADF International, which is representing her in court, condemned the judgement in a statement posted to the ADF’s website:
“The UK’s censorship crisis is the result of a longstanding failure by British politicians to vigilantly protect fundamental rights in the UK, while hypocritically claiming to champion them abroad.
We cannot consistently claim the UK is a bastion of free speech when law-abiding citizens like Livia are prosecuted for nothing other than peacefully offering to speak to people. What freedom do we have if citizens cannot offer a consensual conversation in a public space?
Today, authorities are targeting conversations and even silent prayers they say are related to abortion. Tomorrow, it could be any other topic that goes against the mainstream perspective, as defined and policed by those in power. The slippery slope towards tyranny is clear. This is not how free and democratic countries should function.”
