Megachurch Puts on ‘Greatest Snowman’ Christmas Spectacular
Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano, TX, the 40,000-member megachurch led by Dr Jack Graham, continues the tradition of putting on a spectacular music show for their The Gift of Christmas production, and this year is no different.
Advertised as a “visually stunning multimedia event complete with special effects,” the event features a “nearly 1,000-member cast and choir, live orchestra, flying angels, and much more!” Guests can see everything from drummers flying through the air lit up in LEDs, live camels trekking across the stage, and Santa Claus and his sled hoisted above the crowd while strobe lights, lasers, and fog machines enthrall the crowd.
This year’s presentation includes “Elaborate staging and lighting, state-of-the-art, high-resolution video technology with a massive LED video wall, live 50-piece orchestra, brilliant musical scoring, flying angels, live animals, the Living Nativity, and much more!”
Tickets for the show, which ran from December 6th to the 15th, cost between $19-$69.
One piece that caught our attention was reworking the song “The Greatest Show” from the 2017 musical “The Greatest Showman,” with the lyrics changed to match the theme.
A spokesperson for Prestonwood has previously responded to criticisms of the spectacle, insisting:
For more than a quarter of a century, Prestonwood Baptist Church has pulled out all the stops in celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ during the Christmas season…We are grateful to have the opportunity to share this grand celebration of our Savior with as many as 75,000 people each year through ‘The Gift of Christmas.’
“At Prestonwood, we believe Jesus deserves our absolute best, especially at Christmas. It’s unfortunate that the perennial American tradition of the church Christmas program now draws hateful ire from some. We pray that they, too, may come to know the joy of Christmas and the love of our Savior.”
