THIS Country Just Granted Prostitutes Pensions And Maternity Leave in World’s First-Of-A-Kind Law
In the first law of its kind in the world, Belgium has decriminalized sex work and formally granted prostitutes the ability to enter into official employment contracts for their “trade,” along with the ability to enjoy employment rights and health benefits those contracts bring.
According to the NY Post, “Under the new law, the country’s sex workers will have access to employment contracts and legal protections that provide health insurance, paid leave, maternity benefits, unemployment support and pensions. The legislation also provides for rules on working hours and pay.
Employers must adhere to strict safety and cleaning standards, with all brothels equipped with clean condoms, linens, and hygiene products — along with an emergency button, according to the new law.”
Essentially, it will be treated like any other job, with brothels and pimps forced to adhere to “health and safety standards in the industry, such as the right to refuse certain sex acts or ensure that safety measures like the use of condoms are strictly monitored.
In a BBC report about the new law, they profile a prostitute named ‘Sophie’ who was having sex with clients a week before giving birth by c-section to her fifth child. Though her doctors recommended six weeks of bed rest following her surgery, she was back on her back within a few days, lamenting that the lack of maternity leave made her life that much harder.
