Christian Dance Academy Disqualified After Performing Routine Criticizing ‘Gender Identity’ Demands Investigation
Months after Christian Dance group Praise Academy of Dance Barbados was disqualified from a national competition after performing a routine critical of woke gender identity ideology, they are now demanding an investigation after the senator involved in their disqualification admitted “there was a real perception of bias’ when he made the ruling, according to a press release by Christian Concern.
The troupe’s piece, Speak Life, took place inside a school science lesson and showed a 15-year-old girl struggling with her gender and sexual orientation. After the girl reads the bible and realizes that it’s not a choice she gets to choose, and finds peace in her identity as a female. This occurs while banners in the background read “Genesis 5:2: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” and as performers say in unison:
I have the right to be taught a solid education; mathematics, English, history, science not genderfluidity. I have the right to expression of thought. So I say gender is not the clothes I wear or the activities I engage in. Those aren’t gender- those are gender expressions and gender roles. So I say there are only two genders. Determine our conception; male and female, man and woman, boy and girl, and XY and XX. It’s not a choice, you don’t get to pick, that’s the science
This resulted in the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA) disqualifying the group. It was aghast at the performance, saying that it made ‘defamatory claims’ and ‘exceeded the bounds of good taste’ because it “denounced various gender identities of the LGBTQ community via raging characterizations and expressions.”
In a letter to Praise Academy of Dance Barbados’ legal representatives, Mr. Gregory Nicholls, a Member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, stated: “I accept… that a fair-minded informed observer would conclude that there was a real possibility of bias in the present matter. I have therefore decided to rescind my arbitral decision of November 17th, 2023, in the interest of fairness to all parties concerned.”
…While Mr. Nicholls has revoked his decision, the ruling of the NIFCA judges remains unchanged.
After reaching out to the Christan Legal Centre in the UK for support, Praise Academy is currently consulting with its legal team to determine its next course of action and is calling for an investigation into the actions of Senator Nicholls.
Commenting on the case, Attorney Davida Maynard-Holligan, who is representing Praise Academy of Dance Barbados, remarked:
“While we are encouraged that Senator Nicholls has withdrawn his ruling, the original ruling against the group remains in place and justice is being delayed. If we had not challenged and exposed what had happened to the group, there is no way that Senator Nicholls’ would have withdrawn his ruling. What he did therefore remains a highly concerning precedent which must never happen again on this island.
The ruling sent a chilling message to Christians in Barbados, especially young students, who do not believe in and refuse to conform to confusing and harmful gender identity ideology and extreme teaching.
Senator Nicholls’ judgment, issued publicly, amounted to an LGBTQ takeover of our legal rights and freedoms in Barbados and cannot go unchallenged.
We will continue to seek full justice in this matter and believe an impartial investigation should be conducted into Senator Nicholl’s actions and what led to them.”
