Senior Pastor of Second Largest Church In America Announces He’s Stepping Down

Chris Hodges, the founder and senior pastor of the Church of the Highlands (COTH), the second largest church in the United States, has announced that he’s stepping down from the role in order to focus on his duties as chancellor of Highlands College, the Christian college founded by the church.

The COTH, a 60,000-member non-denominational Alabama megachurch, operates on an annual budget surpassing $142 million, has 26 campuses, and is led by Senior Pastor Chris Hodges, a terrible preacher that Chris Rosebrough of Fighting For The Faith has chronicled years of wretched bible interpretation.

We last wrote about Hodges after revealing he has a fascinating side gig called Growleader that involves inviting pastors for a weekend-long rendezvous to impart wisdom and guidance at his place. This unique experience comes at a price – $7500 for singles and $10,000 for couples, and a recent weekend retreat reportedly padded his pockets with a cool $200,000 to $300,000.

Hodges made the announcement during yesterday’s church service, which was broadcast to their campuses across Alabama and Georgia. According to Vestavia Voice:

Hodges, who also serves as chancellor of Highlands College, said he’s not retiring. He will continue speaking and preaching for the church but will shift from spending roughly 80% of his time on church matters and 20% on college matters to spending 80% of his time on college matters and 20% on church matters.

“I’m not going anywhere. I’m going to live here the rest of my life. This will always be my home,” Hodges said. “I deeply love this church, … but every day I wake up with a vision for the school. … I have so many things I want to do that will require that [time commitment] to flip.

“I’m not retiring. I’m not burned out. I’m not tired,” Hodges continued. “In fact, I have more energy and passion than I’ve had in a long time. … This transition of roles is going to let me live out my ultimate calling, and that is, I’ve always felt led to empower other leaders.”

Rev. Mark Pettus, a long-time Highlands minister who has been President of Highlands College for the last decade, will take over lead pastor duties.
