OK Senator Files ‘Covenant Marriage’ Bill, Making It MUCH Harder To Get Divorced
Oklahoma State Senator and SBC pastor Dusty Deevers has filed a bill in his state that would “strengthen the institution of marriage” and make it much more difficult for couples to get a divorce.
Deevers, who pastors Grace Reformed Baptist Church Elgin and became a State Senator in 2023, pre-filed SB 228, known as the Covenant Marriage Act of Oklahoma, which establishes the option of a “covenant marriage” that couples can choose to pursue.
These covenants would enable the government to “emphasize the sacredness and utmost importance to the flourishing of individuals and societies of the institution of marriage,” to “strengthen the institution of marriage,” and to “promote the religious freedom of those who wish to enter into a marital union under religious terms.”
Any couple wanting to enter into this sort of marriage, for which they would receive a special tax credit of up to $2500, would have to go through pre-marital counseling on the “nature, purposes, and responsibilities of marriage” and then sign the contract, which reads:
We do solemnly declare that marriage is a lifelong covenant made before God. We have chosen each other carefully and disclosed to one another everything that could adversely affect the decision to enter into this marriage. We have received premarital counseling on the nature, purposes, and responsibilities of marriage.
We have read the Covenant Marriage Act of Oklahoma, and we understand that a covenant marriage is for life. If we experience marital difficulties, we commit ourselves to take all reasonable efforts to preserve our marriage, including marital counseling. With full knowledge of what this commitment means, we do hereby declare that our marriage will be bound by the laws of the State of Oklahoma on covenant marriages, and we promise to love, honor, and care for one another as spouses for the rest of our lives.
Likewise, previous marriages, secular or religious, can be converted into a covenant marriage as long as the couple signs the Declaration of Intent, files it with the county clerk’s office, and completes the same type of counseling on the nature and responsibilities of a covenant marriage that newlyweds would.
Once complete, the couple in the convenient marriage would only be granted a divorce on three conditions: if they can prove by “the preponderance of the evidence” that their spouse committed adultery, committed physical and or sexual abuse towards them, or their children, or abandoned them of at least one year.
Last year, Deevers unveiled landmark legislation that would abolish abortion in his state, stop no-fault divorce, establish that the penalty for a willful false accusation is whatever the penalty is for the crime you falsely accused someone of is, and ban pornography statewide, among others.
This is the wrong approach. The problem is NOT how easy it is to get divorced. The problem is women have a FINANCIAL INCENTIVE to divorce. Just abolish alimony, since women can have jobs now. Trying to go back to only fault divorce or having to prove your spouse cheated or anything like that is BAD, because what if you need to divorce your wife because she’s a psycho axe murderer type? This type of Calvinist lunatic overreach is very VERY vErY bad. The problem is alimony; women are stronk and independent now, so they should get NOTHING in divorce, no house, no money, no alimony; make THAT change, and divorce will drop drastically since women initiate 70% of divorces since alimony is their RETIREMENT PLAN or they want the house to move their boyfriend into, and will keep getting alimony while living in sin as long as they don’t remarry (at least close that loophole to where unless she joins a nunnery alimony immediately ends; in other words, recognize that whatever manwhore she is sleeping with has to take care of her, or she has to do it herself with a job, rather than her ex-husband).
This same imbecile also wants to take away the voting rights of any man who ever watched “porn” and you know by his definition of “pron” watching Baywatch in the 90s counts. What we need to combat porn is to go after the porn site operators, not incels. And making incels felons so they can’t vote will shift politics leftwards.
Also this fails to address the alimony problem. By this idiotic thing, even if the husband can prove the wife committed adultery, and thus get his divorce sanctioned, HE WILL STILL END UP PAYING THE ADULTEROUS WHORE ALIMONY. This is absurd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The real problem is that alimony is an old ROMAN CATHOLIC DOCTRINE and does not belong to our society, AND that women work now anyway!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
