Lionsgate Studios Announces Sequel to Mercy Me Biopic ‘I Can Only Imagine’

Lionsgate Studios and Kingdom Story Company have announced a sequel to the breakout faith-based film ‘I Can Only Imagine.

Originally released in 2018 and starring J. Michael Finley and Dennis Quaid, “I Can Only Imagine” is based on the childhood of Mercy Me Singer Bart Millard, who wrote the blockbuster song of the same name.

Grossing $86M on a budget of just $9M, the film covers Millard’s tumultuous with an abusive father, the relationship travails with the woman who would one day become his wife and the origins of their band.

In particular, it delves into his father’s terminal cancer diagnosis and his late conversion to the Christian faith, resulting in their restored relationship and culminating in the creation of the song “I Can Only Imagine.”

The new film will continue Millard’s journey with the same cast set to return, as well as the addition of This is Us’s Milo Ventimiglia, playing singer-songwriter Tim Timmons.

It will center around MercyMe’s 2017 hit song “Even If,” which is about Millard’s son’s battle with diabetes and a bad day he had as his mind swirled with anger, sadness, and resentment about it, as well as the events that made him see it in a whole new light.
