Megachurch Pastor Puts on ‘Die Hard’-Themed Christmas Service And Does THIS Wild Thing

Brian Tome is the lead pastor of Crossroads Church, a seeker-sensitive, multisite megachurch in Cincinnati, Ohio, that advertises itself as a “place for people who have given up on church but not on God.” They further note that they are an “interdenominational church” and that “Our beliefs are shared by many different Christian denominations, and we welcome everyone. It’s like one big pool party, with Methodists and Catholics and Presbyterians all doing cannonballs together.”

To this end, the church is putting on a Christmas at the Movies for December, where they do sermons based on holiday films, seeking to exegete the bibley-bits from whatever flick they have on the go. Last week was Home Alone, and this week it’s Die Hard, because:

“Before John McClane saved the people in Nakatomi Plaza, Jesus sacrificed himself for us. To live a life of faith, Jesus asks us to follow in His footsteps. Whether it’s walking across glass barefoot or taking out the trash for the tenth time in a row, we become like Jesus when we die to ourselves.”

Notably, the film is a hard “R” for nudity, violence, and profanity, with its IMDB page offering up a parental guide.

For the introduction of the Sunday morning sermon, Brian Tome reenacts a scene from the movie, climbing through an air duct before emerging on stage, looking beat up and bruised, before lighting up a real cigarette and smoking on stage.

  1. I grew up in that era, but never watched Die Hard. I mean caught a scene here or there on TV as my dad flipped channels, and I had the PS1 Die Hard video game, but I still to this day have never sat down and watched it. I’ve never particularly liked Bruce Willis in any other movie of his I have watched, so when people tell me how great Die Hard was, I just don’t buy it. The video game was aweful.
