Tony Evans Says He’d Be ‘Lynched’ If He Became SBC President

The keynote speaker for the Southern Baptist Conventions’s (SBC) Send Conference yesterday told the crowd that he would be “lynched” if he ever became President of the Southern Baptist Convention, playing into tropes that the SBC is rife with racists and white supremacists for a laugh.

Evans is a disastrous choice to be giving a talk, and it shows the drift of the denominational leaders who thought his presence was a good idea. He is not a Southern Baptist, but instead is a dangerous social justice warrior who affirms and supports Critical Race Theory and recently was seen espousing standpoint theory when he capitalized on the color of his skin to sow seeds of discord in American evangelicalism by encouraging the racist, divisive protests against the Dove Awards.

Furthermore, this man is a rank heretic. Evans’ heresies include (but are not limited to) Pelagianism (the denial of original sin), Inclusivism (you don’t have to be a Christian to be saved), and Limited Theism (the denial of God’s omnipotence).

It’s no wonder that when someone yelled “Tony Evans for SBC president” he responded, “I thought lynching was over.”

Despite saying the words for laughs, many in the crowd were shocked by the response, voicing their displeasure on social media that he would repeat these false stereotypes in such a tone-deaf way. This is particularly true within the context of many prominent black southern baptist pastors leaving the convention under charges of racism and that the SBC, as put by Beth Moore, is chocked full of white supremacists.

“The use of lynching was a deliberate provocation. It tells you what he really thinks of us,” said one messenger. “There’s nothing funny about it, and the only ones laughing were the liberals who think it’s probably true.”

    1. You don’t know the difference between a racist opportunist and a pastor, do you, Johnny? Also, your post is missing a bunch of tiny flags this morning which I find troubling. Is this a cry for help?

    2. Actually, I’m understanding more and more why in the past heretics were in fact lynched.

But it has NOTHING to do with the color of his skin.

It is because he promotes heresy.

And also, to be clear, I do not believe laws against heresy can be enforced in a lawless and (equivalently!) theologically ignorant society such as our own.

But sometimes I wish they could be. Not because I want to see people hang, but because I want them to stop spewing heresy.

  1. Is it me or is all this propaganda in our society all about trying to convince a certain group of people to willingly subjugate themselves permanently based on lies?
