Several years ago JD Hall debated American Visions’ Joel McDurmon on the merits of Theonomy, and specifically, “Are the Mosaic civil laws obligatory for today?”
It did not go well for the other side, with McDurmon demolished and his supporters aghast and shellshocked, not unlike the soldier at the beginning of the film Saving Private Ryan that walks around in a daze looking for his arm. Except in this case it’s not their arms they’re looking for, but rather a leg to stand on.
While he would likely never admit it was on account of this, we are pleased to note that McDurmon abandoned most of his positions and recanted theonomic distinctions like that of the Mosaic penologies shortly thereafter.
In the aftermath, JD wrote this short booklet where he delves into the controversy surround the event. About the video rights, the motives for having the debate, the chatter flying back and forth, how JD studied for it, and some thoughts after each segment of what he was thinking and why. Essentially, it’s an excellent debrief after the fact, and it’s available completely free for your viewing pleasure.
For those wanting to watch the debate to get some context for the book, it can be seen below.
