Texas City Becomes the World’s Largest ‘Sanctuary City’ for the Unborn

A supermajority of voters in the city of Lubbock, Texas just made history after overwhelming voting to ban abortion within city limits, making it the most populous city in the world to become a sanctuary city for the unborn.

By a margin of 62 percent to 38 percent, voters in the city of 265,000 cast their ballot in a May 2nd referendum, approving an ordinance that says, “It shall be unlawful for any person to procure or perform an abortion of any type and at any stage of pregnancy in the City of Lubbock, Texas,” and that “It shall be unlawful for any person to knowingly aid or abet an abortion that occurs in the City of Lubbock, Texas.” Lubbock is the 11th biggest city in Texas and the 83rd in the United States.

In total 21,400 people voted for it and 12860 people voting against it, demonstrating the power of passionate people in small numbers to enact real change in their city.

Lest anyone think it was done with the help of the mayor and members of the town’s city council – it wasn’t. Despite claiming to be “100 percent pro-life,” they fought this kicking and screaming. Knowing that council would never willingly place the ordinance on the agenda for a hearing, seven people went around and collected enough signatures to force the council to vote, with the knowledge that if they voted it down, it would go to a public vote.

As if on cue, the city council voted against it 7-0, claiming that Roe v. Wade had to be followed on account of being the “law of the land,” but the people prevailed when it went to a city-wide vote, where they ultimately garnered the win.

The move to make it a sanctuary city came after the apex predator of the baby-killing industry, Planned Parenthood, announced their intention to build an abortion clinic within the city. Lubbock used to have an abortion clinic in town, but it shut down in 2013. The abortion giant began posting job openings in town for the proposed new abortuary and gave notice on their website of the impending new business, which they opened in 2020.

Unfortunately, the bill is lacking in teeth, as any woman who gets an abortion can’t be punished by the ordinance, on account of state and federal laws that protect the freedom to procure an abortion.

What it does do, however, is does let the family members of the person having an abortion sue the abortion provider into oblivion, with the hopes that Planned Parenthood will leave after being buried in lawsuits.

With the ordinance passing, Lubbock has joined 14 other cities in the state which have similar laws which outlaw abortion within city limits.
