Op-Ed: What is The Gospel? In Brief

Have you heard the term “Gospel” and wondered what that means exactly? Here’s what the Gospel is if you’ve never heard it or have never heard it clearly:

Being unable to save ourselves from the impending wrath of God, we humans are up an eternal creek without a paddle. No good deeds we could hypothetically do can outweigh the long list of sins we’ve committed. And God must indeed punish sins to satisfy his own righteous standards.

How then shall we escape this wrath we have due us?

The answer is this: God the Father is also gracious as well as just. And so he sent God the Son, Jesus Christ, into the world to be conceived of the Holy Ghost, born of a virgin, to live the perfect life we should’ve lived and to die a death that we deserve. Over a lifetime of perfect obedience, Christ Jesus earned righteousness in the place of unrighteous sinners. And then, he was placed upon the cross and suffered under the wrath of God *also* in the place of unrighteous sinners, dying on our behalf.

Through this payment made by Jesus in his own blood, God’s wrath is satisfied. At the same time, all who believe in Jesus will be made right with God, not by our work, but by faith in Jesus’ work.

Proving that his deity was real and his sacrifice was accepted, Jesus rose again from the dead on the third day. Jesus now sits at the right hand of God, making intercession for sinners like us.

And if you believe that Gospel, you should repent of your sins and be baptized in the name of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

  1. The Gospel (good news) is this:

    1 Corinthians 15:1-4
Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

  2. And he [Jesus] went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people.
    Matthew 4:23 ESV

Bear in mind, this was at the very beginning of his ministry. Was Jesus’s gospel really the story of his death, burial, and resurrection??? There’s something else going on here. Ask the Father for wisdom (James 1:5-7).

  3. This is a man centred gospel with salvation dependent on man’s faith rather than God’s sovereign particular grace which secured salvation for His elect people in the person and work of Christ and through regeneration grants the repentance and faith He justly commands.

The Doctrines of Grace point to salvation belonging to the Lord so that men would not look inside themselves for an impossible righteousness with their will but outside of themselves to Him alone who makes all things possible by grace through faith in Christ to His elect alone.

  4. Someone told me one thing that made the Gospel click in my head. And I never looked back again.

    God is Holy.
    This is humanity’s biggest problem.
    The only solution is Jesus.
    The rest builds from this.
